#174 – Potato
I’m famous for loving mashed potatoes. Typically the joke at Thanksgiving is that the bowl of potatoes will be passed around the table so that it gets to me last and then I just place the 3/4 full bowl on my plate as if this is all I will be eating. When we go to someone’s house for dinner people are alway’s asking my wife things like “I only made 10 pounds of potatoes, do you think it will be enough?” The part that I love the most is I’m always the one sent home with any leftovers.

…which leaves us with the burning question: white gravy or brown? Chris? Anyone?
Personally, I prefer white. It’s sorta peppery rather than salty and makes biscuits yummier!
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:16 am
See, now this is the kinda job I’d be interested in. Blowing up potatoes into a fine paste.
I loveeeeee mashed potatoes. I can never have enough. I’m always excited for family holidays because that means there’s a huge bowl of mashed potatoes waiting to be half emptied onto my plate. And drowned in gravy. Lots and lots of gravy.
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:42 am
That’s what you do to harvest MASHED potatoes? I’ve been doing this all wrong for YEARS! Now what shall I do with my subterranean steamrollers?!
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:24 am
Hmm . . . wonder what Biff’s “significant other” (assuming there is one) would look like with him in this “American Gothic” kind of pose . . .
January 23rd, 2007 at 2:44 am
brown gravy. white gravy grosses me out. i hadn’t ever seen it til i came down south.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:04 am
So, does he use some sort of heat ray on the corn field to harvest pop-corn? Or a giant magnifying glass perhaps…?
Knowing Biff… he might just break out the flame thrower and call it a day…
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:28 am
The real question is what he uses to harvest it. C4, TNT, Det Cord?
Guess it depends on if he wants them creamy or lumpy..
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:39 am
This is such a hilarious webcomic. I just started reading it last week; Good Job Mr.Chris!
mmmm, potatoes….mashed potatoes. Does biff need any farmhands? I’m quite good at menial back breaking labor.
January 23rd, 2007 at 7:43 am
Thanks Gamil. I’m glad you are enjoying the comic.
January 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 am
haha same thing happens to me at thanksgiving
mashed potaters roxors meh soxors heh
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:09 am
I’m almost the same, but my personal preferance is whipped potatoes with cheese. Dear God that stuff’s good. No bowl goes unemptied.
January 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 am
Yeah, I get treated the same way at dinners with mashed potatoes involved. Just last night we had cubed steak (it’s a way of rolling and tenderizing the beef, not cutting it) and white gravy with potatoes. I dish out the spoonful or so of tater my mother wants, give my dad the spoon to get his… and then basically dump the container on my plate when they swear they’ve gotten all they want.
BTW… Darklight, for breakfast… bacon or sausage gravy?

I remember visiting my uncle’s house for Christmas one year… I was feeling really sick, but my family didn’t take it as anything more than being effected by the weather (and I was too stubborn to go get checked out)… They didn’t start to really worry until they saw what I put on my plate for Christmas dinner… only a tiny portion of mashed potatos… That’s when they KNEW that something was wrong and my uncle called a doctor friend of his over to make sure everything was OK… It turned out that I had appendicitis…
My insatiable hunger for mashed potatos saved my life… haha
January 23rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
I Like mashed potatos. Also this Comic’s Pretty damn funny. You’ve earned another Regular.
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:09 pm

January 23rd, 2007 at 1:09 pm

Yeah mashed potatoes! Every special occasion when they server mashed potatoes I fill like half my plate with the stuff! and still linger around the bowl and seeing if anyone else wants it or not! ^^
Well keep em coming Christ ^^
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I’m the same way with my mother’s mashed potatoes, I can eat bowl after bowl of them and I’m perfectly happy with just those for a meal.
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:10 pm
Roy_vf1s – Sausage gravy, then dip your bacon in it. Yummy!
Side note: egg yolk is also good on bacon.
And woohoo! Two first posts in a row for me!
I suppose it’s my nocturnal nature, usually checking comics at midnight, lol!
TS – I agree with Chris. That’d make an awesome Tee… or bumper sticker!
I saw print-off iron-on t-shirt transfers designed for dark shirts at Wal-Mart the other day…
Wes – mashed toes? >.
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:12 pm
…ouch. That doesn’t sound like any fun at all.
Chris – I’m registered now and just figured out that comments can have HTML in them – my half-smiley prematurely ended my last post. How can I edit my comments rather than double-posting? I don’t see a button/link for it… Thanks!
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:40 pm
I get mashed potatoes for supper tonight
January 23rd, 2007 at 7:47 pm
tempting… very tempting
January 23rd, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Love this comic…
Mashed potatoes are alright, but they’re more fun to sculpt than to eat. It freaks out my family though.
January 23rd, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Hmm creative way to make mashed potatoes. Just watch out for flying potatoe parts.
January 24th, 2007 at 8:31 am
Is no one else curious about the type of explosive Biff is using?
January 24th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
O.o thats an interestign way of mashing tatoes.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
That’s got to be the quickest way of mashing potatoes I’ve ever seen.
If Biff is anything, he is efficient.
January 29th, 2007 at 4:45 pm
Biff must be thinking of “smashed potatoes”. Close enough I guess.
February 13th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Awesome.
I love the sulfuric smell of fireworks… It would make excellent flavoring for the mashed potatoes…
March 25th, 2007 at 2:59 am
high grade explosives, the solution to all life’s problems. clogged toilet? drop down a grenade and flush, it’ll clean it right up.
April 3rd, 2007 at 8:39 pm
I couldn’t resist adding my mashed potato love to the fray. My uncle once made the mistake of making a modest amount of mashed potatoes for a family dinner. After they were all gone, he learned he had wronged me and swore never to make the same mistake again. I love going to my uncle’s house now.
April 10th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
i could make a meal out of mashed potatoes and steamed white rice.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
This comic somewhat reminds me of a saying used where I live, this is how it would go in english: “The only things we complain about is the eternal winter and how there is always potatoes for food” of course, the words “eternal” and “always” only jokes. Oh, and by the way I live in Finland…
April 17th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
Classy. *insert devilish grin*
April 24th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I…
…really want to visit Idaho, now. With some… scientific supplies.
April 24th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
[...] Added to the list of things I can’t believe that I didn’t know about before now is the webcomic called “The Book of Biff.” It’s entertaining and educational! For instance, I now know of a fantastic way to harvest mashed potatoes. [...]
May 1st, 2007 at 12:56 pm

May 6th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

May 14th, 2007 at 2:46 am
This is one of my favorite Biffs.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

June 14th, 2007 at 10:20 am
This is exactly how I make mashed taters.
June 15th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
My sister’s like that. She’s the mashed potato fiend of our house.
June 20th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Oh, man. That sounds like fun, and I want to watch it. (from a safe distance)
June 30th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
Biff looks truly happy, in his own Biff-like way.
July 2nd, 2007 at 7:46 pm
my family on my Dad’s side, Dad and me are the mashed potato fiends.. There is always an incredible amount of potatoes at Christmas and they all are usually eaten though it’s usually my aunt who gets the leftovers. At home, we get modest servings and try to save potatoes for leftover breakfast. Sadly, it doesn’t usually happen that way. Oh well, it’s good. Also, I can eat potatoes any way and it goes for rice, chips, pirogies and a load of other foods made of potato or like these foods.
July 16th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Go mashed potatoes!
July 17th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I like em, but without milk. I was stunned when I grew up and found out the ppl added milk to their mashed taters…I don’t even add butter anymore.
Oh and only brown gravy for me, but I don’t much care for the store bought crud. Only fresh from the turkey hand prepared by my beautiful wife will do!
July 25th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Only Biff would have a mashed potato farm.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
That broke my funny bone.
December 23rd, 2007 at 8:47 pm
He needs to put the umbrella implant back in.
January 17th, 2008 at 10:12 am
There’s such thing as White Gravy? ._o
March 6th, 2008 at 11:02 am
So, I just discovered your comic, and I managed to make it to comic number 174 without being unable to control the urge to comment.
My dad’s side of the family and I are in love with mashed potatos. When my cousin was married, between the 4 of us we ate 5 large bowls of mashed potatos. As I’m getting the RSVPs to my own wedding back, only 7 people said they were bringing mashed potatos, which resulted in my mom commenting “assuming they bring large bowls, we still need about 10 more bowls….” The sad thing was, we all agreed and totally missed the joke.
June 24th, 2008 at 1:55 am
I wouldn’t kill you for just a klondike bar, but I would kill you for a bowl of good mashed potatoes.
February 5th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
.. *Boom.*
February 12th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Ah, you love Mashed Potatoes too~? I’m working on the ultimate Mashed Potato recipe as we speak. I’ll be sure to give it to you.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I had a 30 oz soda… By the time I got done reading all the comments it was gone >_< time to get get another one. maybe Biff will buy me a 4000 oz soda.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:33 am
“American Psychotic”
August 3rd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Mmm… mashed ‘taters…
I can’t stand gravy for some reason, but I do like mashed potatoes if they get steak juice in them (rare steak ftw).
Or, y’know, plain. Nothing wrong with tasting the flavour of one’s food.
August 21st, 2009 at 10:19 pm
I thought I’d written that bit about the family mashed potatoes, but lo and behold, it was you! So yeah, I’m definitely the same way– same jokes, even!

The song “Green Acres” is now stuck in my head…where is that blasted power screwdriver!?
