#187 – Vending
It’s funny how many comics I have done now about coffee and I don’t drink it. Starting in college I got addicted to orange juice. That lasted for a good 12 years. Then I did a short stint on Mountain Dew. Now my drink of choice is Lipton Green Tea.

I love the pose. I always do. But I like this one in particular.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:12 am
that really could be any drink – as long as it comes in a cup w/ no lid.
oh and this is my first post here – i like the comic, have read all of them, and have this as my homepage, so i check for updates every time i start my browser.
oh and i get first post on this comic

Poor Biff.
I wonder how much he paid for that coffee.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:53 am
Haha…thats freaking awesome. Love it!
February 9th, 2007 at 2:35 am
He should just laminate himself again… then he can slide up into the machine to get his coffee…
February 9th, 2007 at 7:33 am
Thanks Wiggle and Heinrich.
February 9th, 2007 at 7:45 am
Yeah, that is a new kind of pose, and well executed at that.
You taken any art classes, Chris? I’ve read the About page, but it covers so little…I’d like to know more about whoever’s behind this man of ingeniousness.
February 9th, 2007 at 8:42 am
Haha, this time it isn’t Biff’s fault!
February 9th, 2007 at 8:46 am
Robert, yeah 4 years of art school. That’s the “college” mentioned in the about page.
February 9th, 2007 at 10:06 am
my current favorite is celestial seasonings, manarin orange green tea
…it is addicitive
February 9th, 2007 at 10:31 am
At least it’s better than a levitation potion spilling over the inside of the vending machine.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Russian earl grey, FTW!
February 9th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Just followed the link from Bob and George over here and went through the whole archives. This stuff is hilarious, I think I laughed out loud on around half of them and sent links to some of my favorite to my wife, causing her to facepalm more than once. Definatley putting this on my daily comics list.
February 9th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Welcome Gatewalker, I’m glad you enjoyed the comics.
February 9th, 2007 at 3:32 pm
why is the coffee sticking to the glass
February 9th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
Awesome work Chris! I agree that his pose was executed wondrously, and it conveyed the feeling extremely well. I have enjoyed all of your comics! Thank you for sharing!

Lipton Green Tea, or even green tea in general, is possibly one of the most blessed drinks ever.
February 9th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Man, they don’t stock those things that often. I would *not* trust that coffee.
I started drinking a lot of coffee a few years ago. I don’t really know why, but it’s one of my favourite drinks, now. I went to Starbucks today. Their coffee is terrible. I hate Starbucks.
February 9th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
I too just had to chime in and say that I LOVE the expression, its perfect. And I like him in his long sleeved shirts
February 9th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
this is me : |
this is me on Biff
February 9th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
Lol great expression.
February 10th, 2007 at 12:54 am
Sucks to be him. :/
February 10th, 2007 at 5:31 am
It would be really rubbish if a RL vending machine does come with coffee from the top shelf… and without a lid. SPLASH! All over the floor!
February 10th, 2007 at 5:38 am
Knowing Biff’s luck, if it DID have a lid, the lid would pop off on impact.
By the way, I’m TsukiNoBara’s little sister, also a new reader. Pleased to meet you.
February 10th, 2007 at 9:25 am
nice to meet you too
i was going to say somthing else but i forgot what it was
February 10th, 2007 at 9:27 am
dont you hate it when that happens
February 10th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
This has made me realize that i drink way too much coffee.
i also love the pose ;]
February 10th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
i love the pose too. i think it’s the first time i’ve seen biff look exasperated. after all he’s gone through who would have guessed it would take the inability to get his caffeine fix to do it. i can totally relate.

This actually happened to me once. I was at a mall and found an Ice cream vending machine had just been installed. It was February. I had never seen an Ice cream vending machine so despite the cold I decide to try it out. I put in my dollar and selected a frozen Dove bar with a carmel center. In retrospect I probably should have selected a more sturdy, less potentially messy choice. I expected the thing to quietly slide down a ramp or something to avoid splattering the ice cream, evidently this was not the idea of the designer. The machine began making this weird vacuum noise as if charging and then shot the candy into the collection box with enough force to make the noise of a gunshot echo through the mall and splatter Ice cream carmel bar out in a five foot radius. After the being grilled by mall cops about the “gunshot” and “vandalism” they called the repair guy for “recalibration”. Evidently the ice cream death cannon did not have the stopping power they were looking for.

This is by far my favorite Biff comic. I couldn’t help myself from laughing out loud.
At this costco I go to they have a snapple vending machine. Snapple bottles are glass and there is no padding where the bottles fall. I’ve never been brave enough to buy a bottle of the top row. Yay for Biff (literaly) taking the fall for me ;P
February 11th, 2007 at 10:31 pm
Just got done going through the entire archive, and I must admit that I’m impressed. These comics are mostly sublime.
February 11th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Thanks John.
February 11th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
I must say, this one was probably one of my favourite Biffs.
This is shown by the fact that I’ve been reading for a while now, and only now felt the need to comment.
Keep up the awesome work. Loving it.

A similar thing happened to me once…well, similar in that it was a vending machine fiasco. Anyway, one of my friends had tried to get a bottle from a vending machine, but it was one of those vending machines that brought the drink on a little platform (retrieving it, not catching it) and deposited it into the drink dispenser. My friend’s potential drink failed to ride all the way, and the platform went to the bottom…and he got his money back. Then he repeated it, and another bottle was put on the platform. The next day, two of my friends and I found the vending machines, and we used 5 quarters to try to get those drinks, along with another. It failed. We laughed histerically as we tried it again, and once more. I commented that we killed the system. We paid for three drinks…with the same quarters three times!
We complained about what happened, and we got refunded for each and every drink. $1.25 for each drink that we never actually purchased.
February 11th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
I’m glad we never actually mentioned that the vending machine gave us our money back each time.
February 12th, 2007 at 1:17 am
That’s somewhat cruel of you, and yet I’m laughing.
February 12th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
i drink way to much coffe, but the creamer is so good you should drink it plain i recomend cinnamon chocolate creamer but the regular taste like crap it taste like sweetend milk
February 12th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
hey it would be bad if i it shot out the top of the vending machine, that happened to me once except it was a bottle of mocha frappechino( it was glass, and there was a low ceiling, and rug store) I paid $400 bucks for those rugs.
February 12th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
every ones anoyed with my laughing and snorting:(
February 12th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
BIFF IS NOT AMUSED.
At least it seems so. o_0
February 13th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Guess what? The drinks are still there. And someone else added another bottle to the pile-up.
February 25th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Hehe yeah classic Biffish pose of exasperation.. “Man, this happens EVERY FREAKIN TIME!” hehe. It’s a beauty.
February 26th, 2007 at 12:28 am
orange cut and black pekoe [might be vice versa]
March 19th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
We have a vending machine at my college that is just about like that. Nearly the whole thing is stocked with plastic bottles of soda, as well as a few (glass) bottles of iced Starbucks coffee on the top shelf, meaning a nicely vertical 6 foot drop from the top shelf down to where you get them. No joke. I have to wonder about anyone who stocks a soda machine full of plastic bottles and puts the single row of glass bottles on the top shelf. I don’t think anybody has yet tried to get one.
March 25th, 2007 at 3:16 am
one morning in a cafeteria, i made a small complaint about soda water coming from the mountain dew tap and the Russian chef stated yelling how i should be happy it was there since i shouldn’t be drinking pop in the morning, i found out then why it would have been wiser to complain that the juice machine was broken.
March 25th, 2007 at 11:13 pm
I really like the pose. I’s very nice.
April 29th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
I LOVE the pose! Been reading biff for a few weeks now. I get that way when the damn school soda machien gives me Diet coke instead of my Mr. Pibb. More then once the halls have echoed with my battle cry, “THE SODA MACHINE MUST DIE!” (rip off of romeo must die, but you get the point…and this is a true story.)
May 5th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
…i found these comics today and thought it ironic that i am currently drinking Lipton green tea which is [or was] your drink of choice. love all the comics [and this pose] btw
May 18th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Biff always looks annoyed.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Bahahahaha! I absolutely LOVE Biff’s pose in this one! If you put him like this on a t-shirt I’d totally buy it.
June 26th, 2007 at 10:18 am
Hey… I was drinking Lipton Green Tea when i read this.
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Who does that anyways? Puts coffee with a bad lid on the top shelf. Also… it is Biff’s fault this time, he should’ve gone somewhere else for coffee.
July 17th, 2007 at 5:21 pm
That’s a lot of coffee…
July 25th, 2007 at 11:46 am
I can understand why that can be a problem.
Did they put it at the top just so they can watch the look on his face when he buys the coffee and it spills?
October 2nd, 2007 at 10:43 pm
^_^ nummy lipton green tea! now its with citrus! thats the best!
December 25th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
My friend can dislocate her arm – she said that’s how she got out of the straightjackets – and said she could steal from vending machines, then they got redesigned.
Who watches Azumanga Daioh?
It couldn’t be on bottom – then whenever the machine got restocked or something dropped, bits of stuff would get in the cup.
February 20th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I haven’t seen Azumanga in a couple years, but I’ve been meaning to track it down.
There’s a coffee vending machine in the computer science building at my school. I think it just fills a cup and opens up a little door, no dropping stuff. Boring.
It doesn’t get used as often as the Mt. Dew button on the soda machine right next to it though. CS + MD=Productivity, apparently.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Great comic, he looks so ticked off, hahaha
October 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
i like chai tea myself,
also i saw this show about vending machines and there is like this one in japan that takes up a whole wall and is avending machine mini-mart you can even buy a dozen eggs from it, some how i feel biff should be kept away from those
January 20th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Love his pose and expression. xD It’s like he’s thinking, ‘Well crap. I wasted a buck for THIS?’
