A guy I dated awhile back had a laptop when he was in college. He'd take notes on it in class, but the keys really clicked loudly, and he knew he was pissing people off.

So he made a "paper keyboard". He took the laptop apart at the keyboard level, took two pieces of paper, drew out the keys and letters and numbers on one piece, then sandwiched the sensor membrane that the keys hit to send the message to the computer what letter was typed between the two pieces of paper, and then put some sort of thin clear covering over the whole thing.

It was absolutely silent. He used to take it with him when he had to go to the bursar's office and had to wait in line for awhile. It's so weird, but it worked.

i used to doodle like mad throughout elementary school and one day in the third grade i was going to town on some amazing piece of third grade artwork with a marker so that it was loud enough for the teacher to hear while he was giving out intructions. he told me to stop once and went on with his lecture. so i stopped and then started again when i deemed his lecture unworthy of my attention. he told me to stop again. this repeated itself at least three times.

I'm young enough that my only 'real' experience with typewriters is playing with the one that we had in my high school's props department. I know how to use one - I've seen plenty of movies where they're used - but I'd never really used one. The theater teacher thought I was funny, with how fascinated I was by it. It was really cool, especially since it still actually worked.

@Felix - hey, it's still kinda worth getting up on Saturday mornings. CW has a pretty good Batman show on Saturdays. You're never too old for Batman!

We used to have an old manual typewriter. Damn, that thing was heavy! But we never used it, so Saturday mornings, as well as all other times or the week, for free from it.

On a side note, I remember when it was actually worth getting up Saturday morning (:
