Yes, Torg, that was indeed the joke. From the Simpsons episode in which we glimpse Lisa’s future for the first time. Chief Wiggum was running a tent that featured “legendary creatures,” and that is how he described the esquilax he had.

No no, the legendary esquilax is a rare horse born with the head of a rabbit and the body of a rabbit.

As for the egress, Kbman has basically the right information, but the way I always heard its origins (and Wikipedia backs me up on this) was at P.T. Barnum’s American Museum. “At one point, Barnum noticed that people were lingering too long at his exhibits. He posted signs indicating ‘This Way to the Egress’. Not knowing that ‘Egress’ was another word for ‘Exit,’ people followed the signs to what they assumed was a fascinating exhibit…and ended up outside.”
