Oh I hope this gets read. The concept you mentioned, interestingly enough, has a movie/book about it. It's called perfume. I have watched nor read either, but I have heard about them.

Its a story of a boy whose sense of smell is so powerful, its the only way he perceives the world. Yet he himself has no scent. The main premise of the story is that humans are animals just like every other creature, and rely on scent to lead themselves through life, we however are completely unaware of how big a factor scent plays in our perception of the world.

The boy progresses through the film following scents, unable to be detected by other humans because he himself has no scent. He eventually starts hunting virgin girls because there scent is so pure, and refined that scent into a perfume, which he then uses on himself to make others adore him. When a crowd of people do not believe that scent is such an overwhelmingly important sense, he sprays the perfume upon them, and they immediately break out into an uncontrollable orgy.

Humans actually have a pretty good sense of smell.

Our noses are just too far from the ground to pick up anything interesting.

Snakes have, among other highly interesting sensory arrays, a bicameral sense of smell. That means they have smell depth perception. I can't even imagine what that would be like.

Also, sharks can smell blood in the water miles away mere seconds after it's spilled, so don't underestimate the speed with which olfactory particles can travel. . . though I doubt motor vehicles would develop anything like they have done in a society where smell is as important as sight is to us.

@iptrippen: I've read that book! It was pretty good; the title story really stuck out to me, because my computer prof was (and probably still is) working on robotic vision, making a robot that can navigate by cameras. It's a lot harder than it sounds. What reminded me of it is that that guy essentially just has computer vision.

I don't have much of a sense of smell. Or maybe, I actually do, but I've gotten used to a number of scents (the ubiquitous 'weird odour' in our house) and have weird tastes in the rest.

"I wonder if we would be able to travel at high speeds in a car while using our sense of smell as navigation."

Now I have this picture in my head of every car on the road toolin' along with it's driver's face poking out of the window with his/her tongue hanging out and flapping in the breeze...

You should get "The MAn Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" by Oliver Sacks. It has a story in there, called "The Dog Inside", about a man whose sense of smell was suddenly heightened. It's non-fiction, which makes things even weirder.
