#799 – Actinidia
I still remember the first time I tasted a kiwi. It was in a class back in grade school. Our teacher brought some in for us to try. None of us had ever seen one before. We were shocked at the bright green insides after examining the little fuzzy brown eggs. I remember thinking parts of it tasted like strawberry and parts tasted like banana. Now I just think it tastes like kiwi.
Happy book 4th of July tomorrow!

ahah… I’m allergic to kiwi
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:17 am
That may be the quickest way, but it’s hard to find the back end of the kiwi…..
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:22 am
Oh, the zipper! Is that what it’s there for!
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:33 am
Got to make sure you cut off its beak first.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:43 am
Well coming from the land of the kiwi.. I can give you a few tips.
The way I eat them is to cut in half and scoop out the insides with a teaspoon.
And they’re not called kiwis down here, that’s the bird, although they look similar. We call them Kiwifruit.

I… I should make a New Zealand joke here, but I can’t think of anything. Forgive me.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:37 am
Wouldn’t that give the kiwi a metallic taste?
*shudders*
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:25 am
I actually heard there are people who it it with the skin… *shudders*
and @Ziggi – “The best way to eat out a Kiwi is opening the zipper on the front”…
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:26 am
and * eat it, not it it.
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:34 am
Almost 800th comic! I’m excited!
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:45 am
all of my Kiwifruit keep getting their zippers stuck… It’s a real pain, but it’s alot better than the button fly kiwwi…
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:51 am
I can never seem to find that zipper…
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:15 am
My Kiwifruit is defective… It doesn’t have a zipper.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:43 am
All of my kiwi have switched to Velcro.
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 am
Wow, youd be amazed at how many people spend frustrating hours trying to open something, and then they realize theres a zipper on the back. Obviously, Biffs not one of those people.
Then again, he DID wait for some time before he realized the escalator in his home was broken.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:09 am
You knowm coming from New Zealand and hearing people talk about eating Kiwi, its always kinda funny, as here, Kiwi is a bird that is endangered, Kiwifruit is the fruit to which others refer to as kiwi.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:27 am
GAH! NO! KIWI! GAH!
A Kiwi is a BIRD! A flightless, nocturnal BIRD! A bird that looks as though God had a bunch of leftover bird and other animal bits and shrugged, mushed them all together and then, upon seeing this thing, decided to hide it far away from where any civilized person could find it.
Biff has a KIWIFRUIT!
Seriously. I’d know, as I’m in that odd little part of the world where Kiwi and Kiwifruit originate (though there’s debate on the fruit).
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:27 am
I once got my kiwi’s caught in MY zipper…Unpleasant.
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:19 am
I eat the kiwi with the skin on it. Try it. It’s surprisingly good. They fuzz on it is a little disturbing at first but its good.
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:39 am
I have to give half credit to TCC for this one:
Biff appears to have discovered a new species of fruit fly.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Kiwi is my favourite fruit that I’m not allergic to (peaches and plums are more delicious, but I only eat them rarely because I have to get all hopped up on Benadryl first so that I don’t break out in sores).
My trick for eating them is to use a spoon. I use the edge of the spoon to cut off a little “cap” at the top, then scoop out the insides, leaving only the skin behind as a little empty husk.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I hate how everyone calls them Kiwis. Their proper name is Kiwi fruit. Kiwis are the birds, dammit.
There is a difference! Stop calling them kiwis! They’re Kiwi fruit!! D:
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Hm… I’ll be sure to try that next time.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm
kiwi was my first fruit, and now it is one my most favorites, but they are so expensive now.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 pm
I can’t find it under all this fuzz on this dang kiwi
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
I eat my kiwis with a power drill. It’s kind of confusing at first, but you figure it out eventually.
Tomorrows my birthday, yay!
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Seeing as I have complicated ways of eating fruit, I use a paring knife to peel off the skin (stuff will choke you badly) and then I just eat it whole. Or slice it up if it’s for a fruit salad.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I am also a Kiwifruit spooner, yum, lots of vitamin C…Biff just needz to cut the fruit in half!
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Happy 4th Biff!
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:52 pm
the Kiwi fruit…So rare and exotic…I haven’t had any in years.
So, Biff’s trying to unzip it. Be careful, Biff! It’s got little seeds.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:34 am
Ah, the zipper…
July 5th, 2009 at 2:04 am
I’m one of those crazy people who eats the skin…best part for you…why peel it?
July 5th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Kiwi – 2 for a dollar
Zippered Kiwi – Priceless
July 5th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I love kiwi. But I only buy them when there’s a ’six for a dollar’ sale or something. :]
July 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Mmmmm…. Kiwis….
July 7th, 2009 at 5:44 am
An old joke :
An elderly pair went to a fruit market, seeing the brown, hairy fruit for the first time, he said : ‘Oh look dear, hairy potatoes! Let’s buy them, you can do some hairy potato tart’ ‘Oh, you stupid thing. These are KIWI, they make a shoe paste!’
July 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I eat kiwis with the skin on. I just give it a good wash first to remove anything I wouldn’t want to eat. It’s hald because it’s efficient and half because I am lazy. It also adds a whole new flavour to it.
July 8th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I’m not particularly fond of Kiwifruit.
July 8th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
once, in kindergarten, we did a taste test thing where you had to identify foods blindfolded. I somehow got the kiwi and banana mixed up. Other then that I was good though…
July 8th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
you know kiwifruit is its full name and that some people call a new zealender “kiwi”. just anoher odd fact
July 21st, 2009 at 12:08 am
Yeah im also from New Zealand and its odd hearing it called a ‘kiwi’ as to us that is a flightless bird native to NZ and other nations around the world call New Zealanders ‘Kiwi’s’ so its strange hearing it called kiwi instead of kiwifruit haha.
July 21st, 2009 at 12:12 am
Sorry for the double post just realised there are a surprising amount of New Zealanders who read the Book of Biff. Pretty small nation so dont really see others on the internet let alone 4 or 5 commenting on one comic haha. Nice work Chris

Some of you seem to be mistaken. The mistakenly named “kiwifruit” is in fact the imature form of the organisim known in NZ as the Kiwi. In other regions of the world, we simply refer to them as kiwis.
The adult Kiwi bird lays its egg, from which grows the ‘kiwifruit,’ which in turn eventually develops the secondary characteristics readily recognizable as belonging to the class Aves. “Scooping out the inside with a spoon,” is a practical method of eating immature kiwis, as at this stage in their development they have not developed awareness/sentience.
After a kiwi has become fully mature, the life cycle repeats itself. It is thought by most zoologists that this unusual life cycle is the result of the long association Kiwis have had with interdimentional travel, an association the Kiwi has in common with Owls. It is hypothesized that in alternate dimensions, this form of lifecycle is, if not rare, then at least somewhat common. Similar biological functionality have been observed in the plant kingdom in our own dimension (ie: hesperidia and the oak/squirrel phenomena).
