#871 – Sternutation
When I was a kid we were all convinced that your eyes would pop out if you kept them open when you sneezed. We would dare each other to do it. The problem with the dare was that nobody would have the need to sneeze at the time. So then we would just go throw rocks at the ground like usual.

Remind me to never stand near Biff when he sneezes…or blinks.

I’d type stuff, but I have a cute puppy on my lap.

I’d hate to be stuck with the bill for THAT.
How are them apples, Biff?

Once during highschool a bunch of us on the science team asked the resident pre-premed why people closed their eyes when they sneezed. She told us that it was because sneezing created a pressure drop in your head that sucked your eyes back, forcing them closed.
True or not, that’s what I’m gonna tell my kids.

ouch, hope that piece wasn’t too important. Were those his eyes then that broke it? If so, that’s got to hurt, otherwise I guess sneezing is just really bad in a place like that near fragile pieces.
Soooo throwing rocks at the ground? good times?

When you sneeze there is a reflex that forces you to close your eyes.

wait… Biff’s eyes Open!? I only know he HAS eyeballs because of comic #39.

Biff?? Didn’t you take cartoon physics 101 and 102?
October 13th, 2009 at 9:19 am
It’s got to have been Biff’s eyebrows acting as whips that broke the vase thingy.

The last sentence made me snort coffee through my nose laughing. Good stuff for a tuesday!
October 13th, 2009 at 11:56 am
hmm, isn’t biff’s eyes always closed or open?
October 13th, 2009 at 11:59 am
@santy – Yes
October 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
@santy – Might want to word that a little more carefully next time…

Has no one here seen Mythbusters?? They proved this one false. It’s possible to sneeze with your eyes open.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
There’s only one small little problem with that little myth that one’s eyes will pop out during a sneeze, the Mythbusters got ahold of it, and actually managed to sneeze with eyes held open. Nope, eyes would never pop out, mainly because of the musculature in the eyes that move them about. Said muscles actually hold the eyes in the socket, and a sneeze would never be able to overcome the force the muscles maintain on the eyes, even with the pressure in the sinus cavity from the sneeze.

My sister (a veterinarian) tells too many stories of canine proptosis (eye extruded from the socket) for me to do other than wince at this one.

Biff should be sneezing into his elbow…you know the “swine” thing, then his eyeballs would just be rolling on the floor! Safer, more economical, garners all sorts of attention and assistance…
October 13th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Yes I’ve seen Mythbusters and no, their eyes didn’t pop out.
Sneezing is common in my house since I kick up dust.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:01 am
Sneezing makes Biff’s eyes pop out like Gauss rounds.
October 15th, 2009 at 1:06 am
yeah, i’ve sneezed with my eyes open before >..<
October 15th, 2009 at 5:50 am
So have I. Still haven’t found those suckers…
October 15th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
@ all you mythbusters fans: Who cares if it’s not realistic, it’s still funny. I mean really, you’re trying to bring realism into a Biff cartoon?
That’s right Biff, you launch those eyes! Or… umm… ouch.
November 20th, 2009 at 12:19 am
If we’re complaining about realism the little part where the supposed eye hit is facing away from Biff.. that means that the eyeball likely bounced off a wall and then hit the vase.. notice that?
